Shingles Information

What is Shingles?

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, occurs when the chickenpox (varicella) virus reactivates in people who have previously had chickenpox. It can cause severe, long-lasting pain, often persisting for months.

How Can You Protect Yourself?

Vaccination is a safe and effective way to prevent shingles and its complications. The shingles vaccine is non-live, making it safe even for people with compromised immune systems.

The shingles vaccine is administered as a 2-dose course:

  • Healthy individuals: doses are spaced 2 to 6 months apart.
  • Immunocompromised individuals: doses are given 1 to 2 months apart.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

  • Adults aged 50 years and over
  • Adults aged 18 years and over with a weakened immune system
  • Adults aged 50 years and over who live with someone who is immunocompromised

Who is Eligible for a Free Shingles Vaccine?

The Australian Government’s National Immunisation Program (NIP) offers free shingles vaccines to:

  • Adults aged 65 years and over
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 50 years and over
  • Immunocompromised adults aged 18 years and over, with conditions such as:
    • Haematopoietic stem cell transplant
    • Solid organ transplant
    • Haematological malignancies
    • Advanced or untreated HIV

Important Information: NIP-funded vaccines may be limited, and not all pharmacies have access to free vaccines at all times. It’s recommended to confirm availability with your pharmacist before scheduling your appointment.

If you’re not eligible for the free vaccine or if it’s not available at your pharmacy, your pharmacist will provide alternative options.
